Chicago: I Was Locked In A Room

I spent part of this past week in Chicago. One of my favorite cities for a chocolate crawl. I’ve done more than one. So, one might assume that I got to experience more chocolate bliss at Vosges, Teuscher, and Blommer.

Incorrect. I was on the ground about a day and a half and spent all my waking hours either training on the treadmill or in the lap pool, or in meetings on technical standards for probabilistic risk assessment.

To make this lack of chocolate adventure in the city even worse, when I found my gate at O’Hare, I also found this.

Yes, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, purveyors of some truly foul chocolate – to date, the only chocolate that I have reviewed and thrown away. It was that gross.

Salvation lay just a couple of gates away.

Oh Vosges. Even if I miss your Michigan Avenue store, you beckon near gate H3. God bless you. And bless your Naga bar, complete with curry and coconut glory. And last but not least, bless your intriguing, limited-edition white chocolate and olive bar.

It almost made my trip OK. Even the midnight return time.

What’s the best food find you’ve ever made at an airport?

  1. I almost always associate Rocky Mountain with those obnoxious caramel apples, but now I'm seeing them everywhere. Looking forward to hearing about that white chocolate and olive bar! The Naga is dreamy...and that Whole Foods flagship store officially has the most Vosges I've seen in one place (haven't been to one of their shops).

  3. Ummm....honestly can't ever think of a time I ate good food at an airport unless it was something I brought myself. Or TCBY. I went on a chocolate tour in Chicago and it was incredible, I tried chocolate with chilis and loved it. So sorry you missed out on this trip! I've never spit out chocolate, but putting olives in it might do the trick.

  4. This is kind of ridiculous but one time there was a design your own salad bar (which I spent about 20 dollars for...even more ridiculous) but I got everything imaginable. I think it was only my favorite because I got sundried tomatoes and everything greek which is hard to find ha. Anyways. I want to fly through Detroit (clearly on my path from NY to VA) all the time now.

  5. The olive is limited edition? I bought it back in 2007 and it wasn't limited. I'll be interested to see what you think; I remember thinking mine tasted a bit like blood... but that was back before I got my serious chocolate reviewing boots on :P

  6. Hmm best airport food is a chicken tortilla soup at the Detroit Delta hub. I just bought a small Vosges white chocolate bar (with lemon zest and peppercorns) and I can't wait to try it!

  8. Blood? bloooooood!? Gross.

I've never had that olive bar, I'm most curious about it. Hopefully it's not very blood-like...
